Impact Spotlight A to Z of Sea Lice Research Highlights: Sea lice infestations are often cited as the top animal health & welfare concern impacting the global Atlantic salmon aquaculture sector. Sea lice research began at Huntsman Marine in 1988 and, today, is one of only a few topics that has the attention from all four primary fields of expertise offered by The Huntsman Marine Science Centre – Breeding & Genetics, Animal Health, Aquatic Toxicology, and Taxonomy & Biodiversity. Huntsman Marine research teammates conduct numerous studies every year that address questions focused on sea lice in fish farming – collecting necessary datasets related to new anti-sea lice natural products, drugs, vaccines and pesticides, answering regulatory questions to ensure responsible use of approved treatments within aquaculture operations, and developing novel sea lice control strategies, such as use of cleanerfish species. OceanSteamCourses Summary: Nearly $1 billion per year is the estimated global Atlantic salmon farming cost due to sea lice infestation, including lost growth and product downgrades coupled with ongoing treatment expense. Sea lice are external parasitic crustaceans that infest and affect salmonid fish. Each sea louse has eight life stages with the two chalimus life stages causing the most significant injury to its host fish as it punctures the skin and feeds on the surrounding flesh. Sea lice research began at Huntsman Marine in 1988 with initial studies focused on the biology of three species of sea lice – Caligus curtus, Caligas elongates and Lepeophtheirus salmonis – from Atlantic salmon cultured in the Bay of Fundy. Today, sea lice research is one of only a few topics that has the attention from all four primary fields of expertise offered by The Huntsman Marine Science Centre – Breeding & Genetics, Animal Health, Aquatic Toxicology, and Taxonomy & Biodiversity. Breeding & Genetics – We perfected closing the sea lice life cycle so we are able to produce tens of thousands of infectious copepodids each year to conduct controlled sea lice challenges with Atlantic salmon in the lab environment. We have used this infestation model to challenge individuals from more than 1,000 Atlantic salmon families, now into our fourth generation, to estimate heritability of Atlantic salmon sea lice resistance and inform broodstock selection within a commercial breeding program. Our challenges have recently also included comparing sea lice infestation rates of individuals from high resistance vs susceptible families when challenged together and separately to monitor selection program success. We are also now challenging rainbow trout families to assess relative susceptibility to sea lice when cultured in full salinity seawater. Animal Health – Each year, Huntsman Marine completes numerous proprietary studies to collect extensive datasets that are submitted to regulatory authorities as new anti-sea lice natural products, drugs, vaccines and pesticides are developed for commercial use. A first step may involve screening compounds of interest for effectiveness at the lowest concentration required to cause mortality or immobility of sea lice through a series of in vitro benchtop Petri dish bioassays. These studies progress to in vivo tank-based trials with Atlantic salmon to demonstrate effectiveness (efficacy) to remove sea lice infestations, assess target animal safety of treated Atlantic salmon, and determine the compound withdrawal period – often conducted in different seawater temperature conditions and/or size of treated fish. Extensive sampling and processing capabilities are offered for blood, feces, fillet and other tissues to understand bioanalytical and pharmacological properties of the treatment compound while ensuring human safety following consumption of the edible portions of treated Atlantic salmon. We also provide expert assistance during the experimental design phase, backed by years of experience and intimate knowledge working directly with all sea lice life stages, to maximize study outcomes. Toxicology – Approval for use in a commercial setting often also requires studies that characterize the potential for impacts from new anti-sea lice drugs and pesticides to other species that may inhabit the water column or seabed near Atlantic salmon sites during treatment. Of particular concern in Atlantic Canada is the American lobster as they are also crustaceans (like sea lice) and support a local high valued fishery. Huntsman Marine offers a suite of controlled challenges on all American lobster life stages to demonstrate non-target animal safety following treatment of Atlantic salmon farms. Recently published examples of our methods include: azamethiphos (Salmosan®Vet) on planktonic Stage I larvae ( https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/are.16109 ), emamectin benzoate (SLICE®) on Stage IV+ settled juveniles ( https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ecoenv.2018.06.075 ), and emamectin benzoate (SLICE®) on adult egg carrying berried females ( https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2024.174840 ). Taxonomy & Biodiversity – Regulators may approve use of a new anti-sea lice drug or pesticide treatment after completion of specific controlled laboratory studies as described above. However, initial uses may be restricted to a single or limited number of farms until extensive environmental monitoring is completed. Huntsman Marine undertakes freshwater and marine sampling using a variety of techniques to monitor for product residues and study their effects on water column and seabed biodiversity. Monitoring may occur over an extensive period – often months to years – after Atlantic salmon farm treatments. Our research vessel R/V Fundy Spray provides an excellent platform for marine studies in New Brunswick while we are able to undertake monitoring in other Atlantic provinces as well. Cleanerfish Production – In recent years, aquaculture producers globally have explored use of cleanerfish species in net pens with Atlantic salmon as a non-drug biological method to control sea lice infestations. Huntsman Marine has produced hundreds of thousands of juvenile lumpfish to support local producer sea cage stocking mostly along the south coast of Newfoundland as the local sector explores this as part of their strategy into the future. Our total production capacity is millions of lumpfish fry each year to serve as cleanerfish should the industry decide to move more deliberately in this direction. Research described in this Impact Spotlight has been funded over the years through several different projects by private sector Study Sponsors, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, New Brunswick Innovation Foundation, Industrial Research Assistance Program – NRC, and Genome Canada. Huntsman Research Timeline 1994 Transgenic Atlantic salmon raised for A/F Protein (Canada) Inc. matured to allow spawning and study the heritability of enhanced growth traits. Huntsman production of transgenic Atlantic salmon and maintenance of a number of brood lines continued to 2004 when these fish were transferred to a dedicated facility belonging to Aqua Bounty Canada in Prince Edward Island. 1986 A seawater aquaculture grow-out site was established in Brandy Cove (just offshore from the Huntsman Lower Campus) as a business/technology innovation centre to test new cage designs and evaluate Atlantic salmon diets for Moore-Clark Co. (Canada) as one of Canada’s leading aquaculture feed companies. A consortium of 20 universities and several government departments came together to form the Huntsman Marine Laboratory (name changed to The Huntsman Marine Science Centre in 1987) as a completely separate, federally incorporated, non-profit, registered charitable organization to become a “co-operative venture in learning.” Decades later we now refer to this as a social enterprise . 1969 RECOGNITION: Atlantic Reference Centre recipient of the Visionary Award for a New Brunswick organization from the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment in recognition of its collections and research services. CAPACITY: Seawater system upgrade completed to provide up to 1,000 US Gallons Per Minute of natural seawater. 2009 CAPACITY: New seawater supply system commissioned to provide our research and Fundy Discovery Aquarium operations with up to 3000 US Gallons Per Minute of natural seawater funded by ACOA, Province of New Brunswick and Huntsman. 2017 2001 CAPACITY: Construction of wastewater effluent ponds. 2013 BREEDING & GENETICS: Established as the Canadian east coast operational hub to maintain cryopreserved milt for Canada Cryogenetics Services Inc. 1974 Contract research at the Huntsman began with responsibility to manage and maintain the North American Salmon Research Centre (NASRC), which was built by the International Atlantic Salmon Foundation (presently ASF) from private funding with operating funds provided by the Department of Fisheries and Environment, Fisheries and Marine Service (presently DFO). Initial efforts ran for a decade to evaluate genetic selection as a tool for increasing the adult return rate in sea ranching efforts. 1977 Established the Larval Fish Laboratory at the Huntsman and a key precursor for the eventual Atlantic Reference Centre partnership between Huntsman and Fisheries & Oceans Canada. 1988 “Atlantic Fishes of Canada” published by Bev and Milly Scott from their extensive curatorial research completed at the Huntsman – a book still seen as the preeminent Canadian fish-bible by professionals to this day. Sea lice research began at Huntsman with initial studies focused on the biology of three species of sea lice – Caligus curtus, Caligus elongatus and Lepeophtheirus salmonis – from Atlantic salmon cultured in marine waters of the lower Bay of Fundy. 1989 St. Andrews Bird Banding Station commences to monitor songbird migrations through the area and now the longest running bird banding station in New Brunswick. 1995 Completed construction of the Christofor Research Laboratory built with funds from the Sir James Dunn Foundation and equipped with funds from ACOA. Huntsman established a site on the World Wide Web with the help of the University of New Brunswick. 1997 Initiated the Atlantic Salmon Broodstock Development Program, managed by the Huntsman, as a cooperative program between several leading Atlantic salmon farming companies and government agencies to improve performance of farm raised salmon through genetic selection. This program formed the basis for the present Cooke Aquaculture Atlantic salmon broodstock program following industry consolidation. 1998 Addition of two large Quonset buildings to accommodate increasing aquaculture activities at the Huntsman focused on sturgeon and halibut. Established a Huntsman Montreal office, with funding from Science Culture Canada, and in association with the Redpath Museum at McGill University to provide information and resource materials for Montreal area teachers and implement an in-class program similar to our success in New Brunswick. This effort was short lived with the office closing in 1991 but demonstrated the potential to export the Huntsman model elsewhere. 2006 TAXONOMY & BIODIVERSITY: Established as the Atlantic Office for the global Census of Marine Life's (CoML) nearshore ocean monitoring network for NaGISA until the program wrapped up in 2010. BREEDING & GENETICS: Atlantic cod genomics project launched with pending anticipated investments in facilities and personnel. A consortium of 20 universities and several government departments came together to form the Huntsman Marine Laboratory (name changed to The Huntsman Marine Science Centre in 1987) as a completely separate, federally incorporated, non-profit, registered charitable organization to become a “co-operative venture in learning.” Decades later we now refer to this as a social enterprise. 2007 CAPACITY: Oceans Tomorrow fundraising campaign launched and culminates with the opening of the Fundy Discovery Aquarium. BREEDING & GENETICS: Launch of the Huntsman led Atlantic salmon broodstock program, which has since evolved to be the cornerstone for the pedigreed selective breeding program for Mowi Canada East operations, with ACOA and industry funding and resulting in significant broodstock related instrumentation upgrades. 2010 2012 BREEDING & GENETICS: First application of sea lice infestation model to challenge the 2010 fertilized year class of Atlantic salmon within a pedigreed selective breeding. Every year class since has been challenged with sea lice using the same consistent challenge model. 2011 AQUATIC ANIMAL HEALTH: Closed the life cycle of the Atlantic salmon sea lice ectoparasite to consistently supply the infectious life stage for use in research. Nearly 15,000 meals are prepared and served annually by Huntsman Marine Hospitality teammates as we nourish students of all ages, colleagues participating in corporate retreats, and attendees to various special events and symposia. The heart and soul of our hospitality resonates from the historic Link’s Crest summer estate of Sir Thomas Tait, presently operated by Huntsman as the Anderson House. This once summer residence was completed in 1929 and stands out as one of the last residential projects designed by renowned Montreal architects – the Maxwell brothers – with their characteristic chateau-style architecture that blends classical and romantic motifs. Tait was the Manager of the Canadian Pacific Railroad and colleague of Sir William Van Horne, who built the Trans-Canada Railroad, thereby historically connecting the Huntsman with present day Ministers Island. Link’s Crest has witnessed many changes in ownership and purpose over the years, including as a convalescent home for British and Canadian Air Force personnel during World War II with a staff of 30 caring for up to 35 patients on the premises. In 1970, Dr. John Anderson (a principle architect of the Huntsman) persuaded Mr. Louis Robichaud, Premier of New Brunswick, to purchase the estate from the Wilkins family to serve as a residence for visiting students, researchers and faculty to the Huntsman. The residence was then renovated for its new purpose and renamed Anderson House . Join Huntsman Marine’s Resident Naturalist to explore the Bay of Fundy intertidal zone and uncover the diversity that call this area home. • Citizen Scientist Marine Cruise | Huntsman

Huntsman Marine Experiences Fundy Discovery Aquarium Experiences Hourly and Day Trips Multi-Day Experiences More Citizen Scientist Marine Cruise This fan favourite Huntsman Marine Experience™ provides hands-on learning focused on mid-water and seafloor marine life within the Bay of Fundy… Overview Location Reviews Overview Duration 3.5 hours About Today, many of our education programs discover the remarkable marine life living in one of the world’s most biologically productive ecosystems – the Bay of Fundy – aboard the Huntsman research vessel Fundy Spray. Join Huntsman educators on this unique 3.5-hour experience modeled closely on our education programming success. During this experience, you will help collect live animal samples and oceanography data that are used to assess local environmental changes. Our Huntsman educators will need your help setting the plankton nets to catch microscopic plants and animals that form the base of most marine food chains. We will lower the invertebrate drag to bring animals from the seafloor community to the surface to have a deeper understanding of the Bay of Fundy. Once we return to the Huntsman, the experience will continue in the teaching lab, where you will have the opportunity to use microscopes and take a closer look at the marine life living in the Bay of Fundy. 15% discount for Season Pass Holders/Members Book Now

  • Arts & Culture | Huntsman

Fundy Discovery Aquarium Visitor Information Accessibility Season Pass/Membership Experiences Arts & Culture Gift Shop More Arts & Culture Art has always played an important role in science. Huntsman Marine continues this tradition, using its facilities and programs to provide intergenerational opportunities for artistic and cultural expression, as we fill a special place within the fabric of southwest New Brunswick society. We look forward to increasing our presence within the local visual & performing arts and cultural activities within our community while also connecting more people to the importance and wonder of our ocean! If you are inspired to support Huntsman Marine arts & culture efforts then please donate or choose other ways to support our mission today! Visual Art – Exhibits The Fundy Discovery Aquarium has a beautiful art exhibition space located just outside of the Dunn Theatre. This gallery provides us with an exceptional opportunity to showcase prints that highlight the intersection where science meets art. We signed a MOU with Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs (Westwood, MA) in August 2021 to display Bow Seat youth art submissions within the Fundy Discovery Aquarium Art Gallery for at least one month during our open season each year. The exhibit is coupled with a silent auction fundraiser to support our respective ocean education, inspiration and conservation efforts while allowing our guests to take their favorite prints home. Bow Seat was created to uplift diverse youth voices through programming, art exhibitions, publications, and scholarships that advance dialogue and participation in ocean conservation. Each year, Bow Seat invites youth from around the world to participate in its Ocean Awareness Contest and creatively explore human impacts on the health of our oceans through visual and performing arts, writing, film, and multimedia. Each August we celebrate the activities and accomplishments of The Huntsman Marine Science Centre, including an exhibit within the Art Gallery. This exhibit often showcases scientific illustrations that were prepared for the authoritative Atlantic Fishes of Canada book written by Dr. Bev & Millie Scott while employed at Huntsman Marine. We also use this exhibit for story telling as we communicate our past achievements and present education & research activities. If you are an artist and wish to connect with an exhibition idea for consideration then we encourage you to reach out directly at huntsman@huntsmanmarine.ca . Performing Art – Concerts The Dunn Theatre in the Fundy Discovery Aquarium provides our community with an exceptional performing arts venue. The Aquarium is fully licensed and open for all 200+ concert participants to explore before, during and after each performance. Each concert has attracted amazing singer songwriters – from emerging regional treasures to established internationally acclaimed performers, many of whom are major award nominees and winners. During Paddlefest 2021, we hosted our first concert in this series, in partnership with Periwinkle Productions and Paddlefest, and our list of amazing performances continues to grow with each passing year since then as demonstrated by the past and planned concerts below. Our Ocean S.T.E.A.M.™ program includes a specific track of art courses partnership with Sunbury Shores Arts & Nature Centre . Ocean S.T.E.A.M.™ was designed to provide individual high school students with an opportunity to attend an immersive course of interest with other like-minded students and explore future career pathways in the ocean sector, including the visual arts. Culture & Tourism The Fundy Discovery Aquarium is one of the top three tourism attractions within the St. Andrews-by-the-Sea resort community, along with Ministers Island and Kingsbrae Garden – collectively welcoming nearly 100,000 guests each year. Together, our three attractions have partnered to offer visitors a discounted Explore St. Andrews Pass, which has been shown to expand the number of overlapping tourists amongst the three attractions while enticing multi-day activities that benefit the entire local tourism sector.
