Adventurous and tasty, eating wild gives us a new awareness of our natural world. From fiddleheads to spruce tips to edible seaweeds, wild foods open our eyes to a smorgasbord of culinary delights held in the fields, forests, streams and shorelines near our homes. Woodlands yield golden chanterelles. Soft shelled clams lie a few centimeters below the surface of tidal flats. Barrens and rocky shorelines can abound with cranberries and huckleberries. Medicinal plants are also growing alongside these wild foods – in fact, many wild edibles also have medicinal properties. Settlers brought many of these here and presently considered ‘invasive’ species. Dandelions, red clover, yarrow, mullein and so many more are nourishing and healing as teas, tinctures, salves, etc. Many wild edibles have short seasons, but there is almost always something to be gathered whatever the time of year. Come on a culinary and healing adventure with us to forage, identify, prepare and consume the abundance we can find at our feet. The Huntsman Ocean S.T.E.A.M.™ program is intended to be accessible by students with an interest in a career in the ocean economy regardless of economic capacity or background. The Huntsman donor community were the first to contribution to the design of Ocean S.T.E.A.M.™ courses and allow us to offer the courses at a favorable cost to students in the first year. Further limited “need-based” bursaries are available to subsidize the student registration costs when financial need to attend is demonstrated to acquire this limited financial support. The total amount of bursary available will be dependent upon available funds for this purpose in the specific fiscal year. This policy provides information related to the Huntsman Ocean S.T.E.A.M.™ Bursary Program. The policy will be applied in an equitable manner to all students applying to the bursary program. Note that attendance to Ocean S.T.E.A.M.™ courses are based on the principle that students are expected to first access support from their own and family resources before requesting additional subsidy through the bursary program. Eligibility Student applicants for bursaries must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada. Student applicants must be 15-18 years old when they attend the Ocean S.T.E.A.M.™ course. Student applicants must be enrolled in a provincial/territorial recognized educational institution or home schooled. Student applicants must be participating in the Ocean S.T.E.A.M.™ program for the first time. Application Assessment & Selection Students are expected to have realistic financial plans to cover their registration and travel to/from the Huntsman costs. All applicants are expected to explore all reasonable sources of funding, including part-time employment, parental contributions, and other subsidies (e.g., schools, community organizations, local businesses, governments, etc.). The selection of bursary recipients is based on demonstrated financial need. The assessment of fincial need is based on household income and number of dependents. All successful applicants for bursaries will be notified by email. Nearly 15,000 meals are prepared and served annually by Huntsman Marine Hospitality teammates as we nourish students of all ages, colleagues participating in corporate retreats, and attendees to various special events and symposia. The heart and soul of our hospitality resonates from the historic Link’s Crest summer estate of Sir Thomas Tait, presently operated by Huntsman as the Anderson House. This once summer residence was completed in 1929 and stands out as one of the last residential projects designed by renowned Montreal architects – the Maxwell brothers – with their characteristic chateau-style architecture that blends classical and romantic motifs. Tait was the Manager of the Canadian Pacific Railroad and colleague of Sir William Van Horne, who built the Trans-Canada Railroad, thereby historically connecting the Huntsman with present day Ministers Island. Link’s Crest has witnessed many changes in ownership and purpose over the years, including as a convalescent home for British and Canadian Air Force personnel during World War II with a staff of 30 caring for up to 35 patients on the premises. In 1970, Dr. John Anderson (a principle architect of the Huntsman) persuaded Mr. Louis Robichaud, Premier of New Brunswick, to purchase the estate from the Wilkins family to serve as a residence for visiting students, researchers and faculty to the Huntsman. The residence was then renovated for its new purpose and renamed Anderson House . The Huntsman Upper Campus property looks much different today as we are now able to sleep up to 150 guests every night to support a myriad of education programs , retreats and Huntsman Marine Experiences™ . Today, Anderson House supports dining services for high school and university students who stay in the nearby Needler Hall as our dedicated dormitory and a series of apartments. Another building was constructed to the south side of Anderson House in 2010 to provide 20 additional modern rooms for professional style accommodations. In 2020, further minor renovations provides an exceptional space for corporate retreats and a beautiful deck added to enhance outdoor dining with a panoramic view of the Town of Saint Andrews and Passamaquoddy Bay. Our guests are never too far from marine life while immersed in learning at the Huntsman. Ocean Access Providing easy access to the ocean is essential for a marine focused innovation park to be effective and support companies developing technologies for the ocean economy. Huntsman is the only marine focused non-government education and research institution located on the shores of the Bay of Fundy – including both New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. We provide a safe and stable platform onboard our Coast Guard certified R/V Fundy Spray with its extensive capacity to access the ocean so companies are able to confidentially validate their innovations prior to commercialization and sales. The R/V Fundy Spray is a 15.24 m (50 feet) converted offshore lobster boat certified by Transport Canada to carry 20 passengers and two crew. Impact Spotlight Addressing Freshwater Fungal Infection in Production OceanSteamCourses Highlights: Saprolegnia is a freshwater fungus that can lead to considerable losses for returning wild Atlantic salmon and the aquaculture industry in freshwater environments. Huntsman Marine often works with local start-ups and small companies to validate novel technologies that often disrupt activities in the ocean economy. We offer our developed methods and challenge models as a service through professional Contract Research Organization activities across our aquatic research expertise and extensive facilities. Summary: Our research teammates developed a repeatable Saprolegnia challenge model at sufficient scale to infect hundreds of fish together in a single tank with the ability to reliably infect multiple tanks over successive days to complete a large study. In doing so, this challenge model allowed Huntsman Marine scientists to be the first ever to describe resistance to Saprolegnia infection as a heritable trait across many Atlantic salmon families (Resistance to Saprolegnia parasitica infection: A heritable trait in Atlantic salmon: https://doi.org/10.1111/jfd.13664 for the open access publication). The study also proposed a new 11-point scoring system to study Saprolegnia skin lesions and compare groups when mortality is not the scientific endpoint. Our Saprolegnia challenge model, coupled with Huntsman Marine toxicology exposure models to assess target animal safety, provides an incredible capacity to collect required regulatory datasets for biotechnology companies as they develop new Saprolegnia treatment options for application in the freshwater fish farming sector that are not toxic or carcinogenic. This was the case for Prince Edward Island (Canada) based RPS Biologiques Inc. as the company gained Health Canada approval for use of their novel product - Supratect™ – formulated with natural ingredients: In 2014, RPS Biologiques Inc. engaged Huntsman Marine to complete a series of effectiveness tests of their product to control growth of the freshwater fungus – Saprolegnia . In 2016, they engaged Huntsman Marine as a next step to complete a target animal safety study using their refined product on Atlantic salmon eggs and fry. In 2018, RPS Biologiques Inc. further refined its product to register both a liquid and powder formulation after Huntsman Marine completed more effectiveness tests on the new dehydrated product. In April 2019, RPS Biologiques Inc. announced they received Health Canada approval of their Supratect™ product to maintain optimal health of fish and fish eggs in freshwater culture environments (https://rpsbiologiques.com/rps-biologiques-announces-health-canada-approval-of-supratect/ ) and the company is now delivering product globally. Supratect™ has also proven quite effective at maintaining optimal rearing conditions within home aquarium tanks. You will have the opportunity to feed some animals, learn about our animal care protocols to keep the animals healthy, including the Life Support Systems that filters and recirculates our pumped ashore natural seawater. Some of our Aquarium animals are only found in our behind-the-scenes tanks! You will also learn more about the broad array of Huntsman activities, including research and education.
