Impact Spotlight A to Z of Sea Lice Research Highlights: Sea lice infestations are often cited as the top animal health & welfare concern impacting the global Atlantic salmon aquaculture sector. Sea lice research began at Huntsman Marine in 1988 and, today, is one of only a few topics that has the attention from all four primary fields of expertise offered by The Huntsman Marine Science Centre – Breeding & Genetics, Animal Health, Aquatic Toxicology, and Taxonomy & Biodiversity. Huntsman Marine research teammates conduct numerous studies every year that address questions focused on sea lice in fish farming – collecting necessary datasets related to new anti-sea lice natural products, drugs, vaccines and pesticides, answering regulatory questions to ensure responsible use of approved treatments within aquaculture operations, and developing novel sea lice control strategies, such as use of cleanerfish species. OceanSteamCourses Summary: Nearly $1 billion per year is the estimated global Atlantic salmon farming cost due to sea lice infestation, including lost growth and product downgrades coupled with ongoing treatment expense. Sea lice are external parasitic crustaceans that infest and affect salmonid fish. Each sea louse has eight life stages with the two chalimus life stages causing the most significant injury to its host fish as it punctures the skin and feeds on the surrounding flesh. Sea lice research began at Huntsman Marine in 1988 with initial studies focused on the biology of three species of sea lice – Caligus curtus, Caligas elongates and Lepeophtheirus salmonis – from Atlantic salmon cultured in the Bay of Fundy. Today, sea lice research is one of only a few topics that has the attention from all four primary fields of expertise offered by The Huntsman Marine Science Centre – Breeding & Genetics, Animal Health, Aquatic Toxicology, and Taxonomy & Biodiversity. Breeding & Genetics – We perfected closing the sea lice life cycle so we are able to produce tens of thousands of infectious copepodids each year to conduct controlled sea lice challenges with Atlantic salmon in the lab environment. We have used this infestation model to challenge individuals from more than 1,000 Atlantic salmon families, now into our fourth generation, to estimate heritability of Atlantic salmon sea lice resistance and inform broodstock selection within a commercial breeding program. Our challenges have recently also included comparing sea lice infestation rates of individuals from high resistance vs susceptible families when challenged together and separately to monitor selection program success. We are also now challenging rainbow trout families to assess relative susceptibility to sea lice when cultured in full salinity seawater. Animal Health – Each year, Huntsman Marine completes numerous proprietary studies to collect extensive datasets that are submitted to regulatory authorities as new anti-sea lice natural products, drugs, vaccines and pesticides are developed for commercial use. A first step may involve screening compounds of interest for effectiveness at the lowest concentration required to cause mortality or immobility of sea lice through a series of in vitro benchtop Petri dish bioassays. These studies progress to in vivo tank-based trials with Atlantic salmon to demonstrate effectiveness (efficacy) to remove sea lice infestations, assess target animal safety of treated Atlantic salmon, and determine the compound withdrawal period – often conducted in different seawater temperature conditions and/or size of treated fish. Extensive sampling and processing capabilities are offered for blood, feces, fillet and other tissues to understand bioanalytical and pharmacological properties of the treatment compound while ensuring human safety following consumption of the edible portions of treated Atlantic salmon. We also provide expert assistance during the experimental design phase, backed by years of experience and intimate knowledge working directly with all sea lice life stages, to maximize study outcomes. Toxicology – Approval for use in a commercial setting often also requires studies that characterize the potential for impacts from new anti-sea lice drugs and pesticides to other species that may inhabit the water column or seabed near Atlantic salmon sites during treatment. Of particular concern in Atlantic Canada is the American lobster as they are also crustaceans (like sea lice) and support a local high valued fishery. Huntsman Marine offers a suite of controlled challenges on all American lobster life stages to demonstrate non-target animal safety following treatment of Atlantic salmon farms. Recently published examples of our methods include: azamethiphos (Salmosan®Vet) on planktonic Stage I larvae ( https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/are.16109 ), emamectin benzoate (SLICE®) on Stage IV+ settled juveniles ( https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ecoenv.2018.06.075 ), and emamectin benzoate (SLICE®) on adult egg carrying berried females ( https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2024.174840 ). Taxonomy & Biodiversity – Regulators may approve use of a new anti-sea lice drug or pesticide treatment after completion of specific controlled laboratory studies as described above. However, initial uses may be restricted to a single or limited number of farms until extensive environmental monitoring is completed. Huntsman Marine undertakes freshwater and marine sampling using a variety of techniques to monitor for product residues and study their effects on water column and seabed biodiversity. Monitoring may occur over an extensive period – often months to years – after Atlantic salmon farm treatments. Our research vessel R/V Fundy Spray provides an excellent platform for marine studies in New Brunswick while we are able to undertake monitoring in other Atlantic provinces as well. Cleanerfish Production – In recent years, aquaculture producers globally have explored use of cleanerfish species in net pens with Atlantic salmon as a non-drug biological method to control sea lice infestations. Huntsman Marine has produced hundreds of thousands of juvenile lumpfish to support local producer sea cage stocking mostly along the south coast of Newfoundland as the local sector explores this as part of their strategy into the future. Our total production capacity is millions of lumpfish fry each year to serve as cleanerfish should the industry decide to move more deliberately in this direction. Research described in this Impact Spotlight has been funded over the years through several different projects by private sector Study Sponsors, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, New Brunswick Innovation Foundation, Industrial Research Assistance Program – NRC, and Genome Canada. TESTIMONIALS “The Huntsman provides such an engaging and positive learning community. As a student, it generated a positive atmosphere and helped develop strong relationships between peers, as well as cater to my interests. The Huntsman provides learning opportunities that you simply cannot get in the typical classroom. As a teacher, this sense of engagement and community has continued to grow, as friendly and familiar faces were there to greet us all when we returned this past September. Even after 9 years, it truly feels like home.” Maryanne Simard, St. Mark Catholic High School “As a homeschooler living in the Ottawa Valley I am not always able to get a hands-on experience… Going to the Introduction to Marine Biology field course at the Huntsman Marine Science Center was like finally being able to do what I’ve been dreaming and learning about for years. I have been so passionate about marine biology for so long that I was quite nervous. I didn’t know if I would actually love it as much as I thought I did once I started doing the hands on stuff. But it was quite the opposite! It turned out to be my own little marine biology heaven where I became more and more passionate with everything we did. I had teachers who were passionate and willing to answer all and any questions I had, I was with a group of equally passionate youth who were as willing to learn as I was and who helped create a space where no one was judged on what they knew or didn’t know. And I got a FULL hands-on glimpse into what marine biology might be all about. From digging up worms, to looking at tiny plankton, to beach cleanups and fish dissections, I loved it all!” Kea McKay, ark Cat "Ever since I was a child, I knew I wanted to be a marine biologist – Huntsman helped make my ambition a reality at a young and influential stage in my career. When I think of Huntsman, I think of being out on the water on a beautiful sunny day. During the marine mammals and seabirds course, we were out on boats daily and sometimes twice per day surveying for animals. From minke whales breaching to bald eagles chasing kittiwakes, we saw and experienced everything the Bay of Fundy had to offer.” Stephanie Sardelis, Department of Fisheries and Oceans Give by Interest - Research Huntsman Marine completes best-in-class ocean focused research in extensive laboratories or directly on the water with more than 500 peer-reviewed publications contributing to science , which continues to increase by more than 12 additional publications every year. StABBS has operated every year since then with nearly 30,000 songbirds banded representing more than 100 migratory species. These totals secures the distinction for StABBS as the longest-running and most productive bird banding station in all of New Brunswick! In earlier years, StABBS banded from May to October allowing it to contribute summer breeding season data to the Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship Program. In 2001, with support from Birds Canada, our efforts collected data within a daily fall coverage project and met the requirements to be an associate member of the Canadian Migration Monitoring Network (CMMN) . These efforts have continued since then, with expanded support from New Brunswick Wildlife Trust Fund (NBWTF) , to monitor the Fall songbird migration on an annual basis. StABBS continues to be the only New Brunswick network station to this nation-wide CMMN songbird-monitoring program (station #23). Primary funding to operate StABBS annually continues to be received from the New Brunswick Wildlife Trust Fund and Huntsman Marine. Birds Canada also provides support and promotion from a distance through their network. Established bird banding stations provide exceptional hands-on learning opportunities for new banders and wildlife technicians/biologists. Experienced, well qualified volunteers (paid by stipend + accommodations) are also essential to operating a station like StABBS and we continue to attract great applicants each year to select high quality helpers who ensure professional data collection while maintaining the highest quality songbird welfare. We also look forward to offering special access to visiting school groups and Huntsman Marine Members are given an opportunity to observe on a couple of mornings each Fall so they are able to share in the bird banding experience while learning about mark-recapture research and how this applies to our monitoring efforts. Updates from 2023 Season September 4, 2023 September 14, 2023 September 27, 2023 October 10, 2023 October 17, 2023 October 23, 2023 November 9, 2023 Why conduct bird banding? Bird banding falls within a class of ecological research methodology referred to as mark-recapture studies. Monitoring songbirds that breed in the Canadian northern boreal forests is a challenge but one that can be addressed by bird experts by banding individuals to collect vital scientific data to gain insights on population trends and changes to the environments in which birds live. Catching birds in mist nets is a slow, but methodical way to collect exact data about individual birds – species, age, sex, body condition (fat, weight), feathers (age, wear) and moult patterns. Banding stations are long term initiatives that record data on a wide diversity of species. Each species has a different lifestyle and migration pattern, and meaningful trends become clearer as the data base expands each year. The information that comes from bird banding stations can never be duplicated. Every bird captured adds something to our knowledge of that species and the migration pattern in a specific year. On average, 340,000 birds are banded in Canada and 860,000 birds are banded in the United States each year. These birds contribute to research that help to: monitor bird populations and rates of survival monitor ecosystem health set regulations for hunted species monitor endangered species maintain longevity records Results from bird banding research have provided a longevity record for the ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) to be 9 years 2 months while that of the mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) to be 30 years 4 months! Bird banding is a scientific technique that requires expertise and skill usually gained over many years of study and field experience. A bird banding station requires special permits, specialized equipment and a trained crew of field assistants. To participate in bird banding activities, you must apply for a Scientific Permit to Capture and Band Migratory Birds. Generally, people with banding permits are professional ornithologists, biologists, wildlife technicians, or non-professional ornithologists who undertake specific studies. People interested in banding birds begin as volunteer banders or students under the direct supervision and training of an experienced permitted bander. Once they have gained the necessary skills and have demonstrated competency in record keeping, ethical capture and handling, bird identification, ageing, sexing, and banding, they may apply for a sub-permit to work on a specific project. You can also do your part and contribute to conservation efforts by reporting bird bands when you see a marked bird by calling toll-free 1-800-327-BAND (2263) to leave a message or online at www.reportband.gov . Information to include: number sequence on the metal band other markers (if applicable) such as neck collar, wing tag, web tag, colour band, leg flag, geolocator (including alphanumeric code, colour and location of each marker) species, sex and age of the bird (if known) how the band number was obtained (bird watching, shot, found dead, injured, or trapped) condition of the bird (alive, dead, in captivity) date the band number was obtained and exact location any other information (behaviour, other birds, time of day, etc.) if you are unsure of any bands or did not see all parts of both legs clearly, indicate this in the report your name, address, telephone number and email address to receive a certificate of appreciation with details related to your reported bird What do we do? Huntsman Marine holds a bird banding station permit issued by the Bird Banding Office within the Canadian Wildlife Service, Environment and Climate Change Canada. The lead bird bander must have demonstrated experience to take on the responsibility of operating a station and holds a sub-permit. This tandem permit process ensures both the organization and the lead bird bander are responsible for the health and care of all the birds, the quality of the data collected, and the training of any volunteers. StABBS regularly uses seven mist nets (each measuring 12 m long x 2.5 m high with a mesh size of 32 mm) that are designed to catch small birds up to the size of a robin or jay. The mist nets are opened every day the weather permits, from late August until late October. The workday starts at dawn with unfurling and opening the nets. The nets are checked every 20-30 minutes with the aim of having all nets open for five to six hours. The nets are always opened and closed in the same order to provide a similar duration to catch birds. Days off can be taken when there is inclement weather that makes it unsuitable for bird movement and banding. Every bird captured is gently removed from the mist net then taken to the “central banding station” table to be examined. Each individual bird is identified, banded with a regular Canadian Wildlife Service aluminum band, aged, sexed, measured, weighed and given a fat score. Characteristics about its plumage is also graded (e.g., feather wear, moult condition, moult limits, etc.). Where does all of our data go? The following data is summarized on the Daily Banding Log: total number of birds banded total number of birds recaptured total number of birds released unbanded Grand Total = Total banded + Total recaptured + Total unbanded estimated totals of all bird species in the banding area – EDT net hours (which nets open, when and for how long) weather (basic observations with codes) interesting non-bird observations station activity – visitors, banding demonstration, etc. In the field, the banding data is recorded on paper in the “Banding Book.” On a regular basis it is entered into Bandit, a government banding computer program. At the end of the year, the data is submitted electronically to the Canadian Bird Banding Office and shared with the United States Geological Survey. Species-specific data is also submitted to the CMMN. The original data sheets are stored at Huntsman Marine along with the entered data files.
