Distinguishing Features
• Erect, large, tangled colonies up to 10 cm high.
• Stem and branches always monosiphonic.
• Stem zigzags and hydrothecae are born at the bends.
• Hydrothecae smooth, cylindrical, 0.3–0.5 mm deep.
• Hydrothecae operculum 3-valved, margin tricuspid.
• Gonothecae elongate-oval with 7–9 strong transverse folds.
Habitat
Attaches onto stones, shells, and bedrock. Depths of 13–622 m.
Geographic Range
Arctic and both sides of the north Atlantic.
Fun Fact
The genus name comes from the Greek symplectic meaning woven together and the Latin scyphus meaning a cup, goblet, or bowl.
