Distinguishing Features
• Anemone up to 30 cm high but often smaller,
• Colour orange or white.
• Edges of disk lobed.
• Very numerous tentacles that form a plume.
Habitat
Attaches onto rocks, piers, and manmade structures. Found down to depths of at least 100 m. Can be abundant in areas with high current flow such as the underside of wharfs.
Geographic Range
Arctic and both sides of the north Atlantic Ocean. Also found in the northwestern Pacific.
Fun Fact
There has been some confusion about the taxonomy of Metridium species. Metridium farcimen
(Brandt, 1835); and Metridium senile (Linnaeus, 1761) and believed to be valid. The former is not found in the Atlantic.
