Distinguishing Features
• Colony small, up to 5 cm but usually only around 3 cm high.
• Stiff main stem with opposite side branches.
• Hydrothecae in opposite pairs.
• Hydrothecae 1/3 free from stem.
• Operculum bivalved.
• 2 lateral cusps on the Hydrothecae aperture.
• Gonothecae pear shaped (obovate).
Habitat
Found from intertidal to around 20 m. Often on brown algae.
Geographic Range
Arctic and both sides of the north Atlantic. Common in the Bay of Fundy.
Fun Fact
The wave exposure of the shore may affect where on seaweeds this hydroid grows. On sheltered shores it may grow on the tips of seaweeds whereas on more wave exposed coasts it may tuck itself down into holdfasts for protection.
