Distinguishing Features
• Tube Feet: along the edge of the flattened sole
• Body: bright red orange with overlapping scales, distinct flattened sole and no tail
• Oral Tentacles: 10 arborescent tentacles
• Dermal Calcareous Elements: absent
• Size: to 10 cm
Habitat
Attached to hard substrates, 10-80 m depth.
Geographic Range
Arctic and North Atlantic oceans, from the Arctic to North Carolina.
Fun Fact
You can determine the age of this sea cucumber by examining the rings on their body scales, similar to counting the rings within a tree trunk. Each year a layer with one light and one dark band is added to their scales.
