Distinguishing Features
• Colonies up to 60 mm tall.
• Stems much branched and tangled.
• Hydranths pink to red.
• Hydranths with two whorls of around 20 tentacles - a central oral and an outer aboral circle.
• Gonothecae in clusters (racemes) have 3–4 apical processes and no radial canals.
Habitat
On various substrates - pier pilings, rock, algae.
Geographic Range
Common around Grand Manan and in Passamaquoddy Bay.
Fun Fact
This hydroid grows quickly and can cause issues for fish farms when it fouls pen nets. This reduces water flow into pens and affects water quality.
