• Head: oral tentacles reduced to anterior lobes. Rhinophores smooth, with a trumpet-shaped basal sheath.
• Body: translucent white with red to maroon pigment spots on the cerata at the tips of each tubercle. Red spots or streaks also occur on the body. There are 4-7 pairs of inflated cerata.
• Size: small, to 10 mm.

Habitat

Intertidal to 180 m, typically shallow subtidal areas on hydroids

Geographic Range

Amphi-Atlantic distribution, common on both cold-temperate Atlantic coasts. In the Northwest Atlantic, D.coronata occurs from the Gulf of St. Lawrence south to Massachusetts.

Fun Fact

These tiny, colourful nudibranchs feed exclusively on hydroids by biting into the outer layer and sucking out the soft tissue. They are quite common in the region. Doto coronata is the type species of the genus Doto, which means it serves as the standard to define what belongs to this genus.
