Distinguishing Features
• External appearance: Light brown sponge with rounded stalk and one or more flattened, leaf shaped lobes. Can be large, up to 35 cm in height. Large oscula (up to 0.3 cm diameter) on fan and stalk.
• Skeleton: Rather confused, with ascending columns two to three spicules thick joined by single spicules.
• Spicules: Fat oxea with sharply point tips. Measurements from: ARC 81472 187(207)249 by 12(14)16 µm and ARC 81481 173(195)215 by 10(13)17 µm.

Habitat
Found encrusting on bedrock and boulders.
Geographic Range
The type locality is the west Greenland Shelf. Common in Gulf of St. Lawrence from 20–365 m, also reported from northern Laurentian Channel, North Labrador Sea, Norway, and Scotland.
Fun Fact
The Latin name means 'little sword' and refers to the shape of the sponge. The term spatula is used in English for a flat blade used for mixing or spreading.
Barcode Distribution
Europe, Atlantic coasts USA and Canada. BIN also contains specimens of Haliclona oculata.
