Distinguishing Features

• Tiny hydroid up to 0.5 mm tall
• Creeping, smooth, stolon giving rise to single hydrothecae on short, tightly coiled, annulated pedicels.
• Hydrothecae tubular with 8–13 triangular opercular segments.
• Gonophores on short annulated pedicels.

Habitat

Grows on other hydroids and bryozoans.

Geographic Range

Arctic and both sides of the north Atlantic Ocean. Very common in Atlantic Canada.

Fun Fact

The name derives from the Latin syringa meaning pipe or tube and presumably refers to the stolon.
