Naturalist/Interpreter – Huntsman Education & Outreach

Location: Fundy Discovery Aquarium, Huntsman Marine Science Centre and downtown kiosk at St. Andrews Day Adventure Centre

 

Commitment: At least 35 hours per week anticipated from May thru August, including weekends and statutory holidays with some changes expected based on activities that will be communicated in advance

 

Rate of Pay: Range starting at $15.00 per hour based on education and experience

 

The Huntsman Marine Science Centre (St. Andrews, New Brunswick) is a not-for-profit charity organization with a focus on ocean conservation and marine education and research. The Fundy Discovery Aquarium operates seasonally from May – October providing visitation and hands-on experiences for over 30,000 visitors annually. Huntsman also recently launched Huntsman Marine Experiences™ to provide greater interaction across a range of marine biology related activities for tourists to St. Andrews. We are looking for active ocean stewards to join our team this summer, who are passionate about the Bay of Fundy and are interested in furthering their education in marine science.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Greet guests and answer questions about the facilities, our programs, and the region.

  • Interpret Fundy Discovery Aquarium exhibits, including monitoring separate indoor and outdoor touch tank locations, and perform feeding presentations.

  • Provide support to deliver hands-on youth programs, including oral presentations with enthusiasm and clarity to students of all ages and the general public (e.g., Huntsman Young Explorer Days/Weeks, Family Explorer programs).

  • Assist with all aspects to deliver scheduled hourly/day Huntsman Marine Experiences™, possibly including beach, vessel and laboratory components.

  • Perform sales transactions for entry, experiences and gift shop, including merchandise and physical count of stock.

  • Assist to maintain Fundy Discovery Aquarium exhibits and facility, including maintenance to the grounds.

  • Remain professional, friendly and passionate at all times.

  • Maintain a neat, clean and organized work environment at all times.

  • Work both independently and within a cohesive team to deliver programs that result in an exceptional guest experience.

  • Ensure all health, safety and security procedures are adhered.

  • Assist in any other related duties as required.
     

Minimum Requirements:

  • Enrolled in high school with an interest to learn about marine biology and the Bay of Fundy.

  • Proven initiative and self-motivated.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a group setting as an effective team player.

  • Enjoy working with youth.

  • Enjoy working in an outdoor setting in various weather conditions.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated planning, organizational, time management and customer service skills.

  • Effective oral communication skills.

  • Intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft Office.

  • Huntsman will complete a police criminal records check, including vulnerable sector, prior to making an offer.

  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment, such as a face mask, for extended period of time and follow instructions to appropriately sanitize on a regular basis due to the ongoing COVID-19 public health requirements.

 

Additional Assets:

  • Enrolled, currently obtaining, or graduated from a university or college in marine biology, outdoor recreation, teaching, or a related field.

  • Proven ability to communicate in French and English.

  • Experience handling and caring for marine animals.
