Summer Aquatic Technician  – Huntsman Aquatic Biosciences 

Commitment: 38 hours per week for 9 weeks (342 hours total). Some flexibility regarding start and finish dates but employment to take place between June and September.  

Rate of Pay:  $14 per hour (accommodations may be available on the Huntsman campus at a negotiated monthly rate). 

Eligibility: This position is funded by ECO Canada and the New Brunswick Environmental Trust Fund. Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria for ECO Canada Student Work Placement Program. Applicants must currently study at a university or college in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art or Math (STEAM) and Business. You must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or have Refugee status. There is no age limit for this program. 

Background: The  Huntsman  Marine  Science  Centre  (St.  Andrews,  New  Brunswick)  is  a  not‐for‐profit  charity  organization with a focus  on ocean conservation and marine education and research. This position is to assist with a research project assessing water quality in the Quoddy Region of the Bay of Fundy by re-surveying sublittoral habitats last surveyed 40 years ago, by SCUBA diving. The technician will be involved in all aspects of the project including participating in fieldwork on the Huntsman's research vessel the 'Fundy Spray'.  It is not required that candidates are qualified to SCUBA dive but suitably qualified and experienced candidates will be given the opportunity to participate in the diving fieldwork.


  • Digitizing historical survey data.

  • Assisting with project fieldwork as required.

  • Cataloguing and analyzing collected imagery and samples.

  • Maintain a neat, clean, and organized work environment at all times.

  • Ensure all health and safety procedures are adhered to.

  • Assist in any other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Enrolled in University or College and studying a STEAM subject related to the position.

  • Proven initiative and self‐motivated.

  • Excellent IT skills - Microsoft Office, Image manipulation packages.

  • Capable of working on a boat in various weather conditions.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated planning, organizational, time management skills.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills (in English).

  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment, such as a face mask, for an extended period and follow instructions to appropriately sanitize regularly due to the ongoing COVID-19 public health requirements.

Additional Assets: 

  • Education or experience in Marine Biology.

  • Experience with identification of marine life (ideally from the east coast of Canada).

  • Qualified SCUBA diver with cold water diving experience.

  • Experience with underwater photography or videography
