Community Outreach & Engagement Specialist

SUMMARY: The Huntsman Marine Science Centre (www.huntsmanmarine.ca) is an independent federally registered not-for-profit education and research institution located along the shore of the Bay of Fundy in St. Andrews, NB. Our mission is to inspire aquatic stewardship through education programming and advance marine science through collaborative research projects.


We are seeking to fill a Community Outreach & Engagement Specialist position who will report to the Manager of Education & Outreach and work with a dynamic team of public outreach and education professionals. The successful individual will develop and deliver meaningful conservation programs that have demonstrable positive impact to our local aquatic environment. Such efforts will build on our highly successful #DebrisFreeFundy and single use plastic reduction programs and diversify the Huntsman Marine presence within our communities.


SALARY AND BENEFITS: The position is a 100% education & outreach appointment with salary commensurate with experience plus benefits, including health care with life insurance and annual and sick leave available following completion of standard employment probationary period. The position is soft money funded and offered on an indeterminate basis dependent on availability of funds and performance.



Community Outreach: 25%

  • Provide leadership in all aspects of community engagement consistent with the Huntsman Marine mission.

  • Design and deliver programs and initiatives that inspire stewardship and conservation of the Bay of Fundy region.

  • Work collaboratively with Education & Outreach colleagues to develop appropriate multi-media interpretative material for use within the Fundy Discovery Aquarium, Huntsman Marine Experiences™ and/or other education programming.

  • Foster appropriate partnerships throughout the region to leverage opportunities and maximize outreach activities.

  • Tell the story of Huntsman Marine research capacity through community engagement initiatives.

  • Identify underserved communities to enhance access to ocean conservation initiatives that meet equity, diversity and inclusion objectives of Huntsman Marine.


Preparation of Funding Proposals: 25%

  • Seek out and respond to funding opportunities with proposals that provide effective and inspirational community-based aquatic outreach initiatives.

  • Generate goal and milestone timelines along with appropriate budget for proposed activities.


Oversee Project Activities and Budget to Meet Deliverables: 25%

  • Track progress of specific projects and initiatives coupled with internal reporting to meet deliverables.

  • Oversee project specific finances using established internal accounting practices when tasked to do so.

  • Prepare interim/annual progress and project final reports as required.

  • Present outreach project results to funders and Huntsman Marine donors as required.


Supervision: 15%

  • Organize appropriate staff and delegate tasks for efficient implementation of outreach activities.


Other Support: 10%

  • Support other Education & Outreach department activities when required, including Fundy Discovery Aquarium interpretation, specific Huntsman Marine Experiences™, etc.

  • Assist in further Huntsman Marine business development opportunities as required.



  • Degree or diploma in biology, geography, conservation or related discipline.

  • Self-motivated individual with a passion for aquatic outreach and education coupled with a strong desire to participate in community activities.

  • Demonstrated ability to cooperate with colleagues having a diverse background and interact well within public settings.

  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills that are informative to disseminate pertinent information in an engaging manner.

  • Physical ability to perform assigned duties that may require work in adverse environmental conditions and/or carry or lift heavy materials.

  • Ability to legally work or obtain a Visa to work in Canada.



  • Familiarization with the specific community engagement landscape in the Bay of Fundy region.

  • Demonstrated experience (2-3 years) with community outreach and engagement with a focus on aquatic ecosystems.
