SUMMARY:

The Huntsman Marine Science Centre is seeking to fill a Cook position within our Hospitality department. The right individual may also advance to become the Food Services Supervisor as we transition through a key staff member retirement succession plan.

 

CUSTOMER BASE:

Presently, the Huntsman Hospitality department primarily prepares set menu meals (accounting for some food allergies known in advance) for various groups, including:

 

  • High Schools and Universities – set cold breakfast and hearty home style cooked meals served at a scheduled time for groups with 10-50 students, teachers and chaperones. Box lunches may be required to match field trips.

  • Tourism Multi-day Experiences – set European-style continental breakfast and hearty home style cooked meals served at a scheduled time for groups with 6-20 participants. Box lunches may be required to match field trips.

  • Professional Development Training and Retreats – menu chosen from items presented to the organizer and expected to also include coffee and nutrition breaks. Typically 10-30 participants.

  • Catered Group Events in the Fundy Discovery Aquarium – menu chosen from items presented to the organizer and expected to also include coffee and nutrition breaks. Seated meal events typically 50-72 attendees while symposia may require food services for up to 150 people. Groups may range from individuals registering for a conference to ticketed events with limited/set menus to wedding parties.

  • Fundy Discovery Aquarium Café – new opportunity for the venue with service offered to visitors to the Aquarium during the summer season. Limited menu and hours/days of the week anticipated.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare and cook complete meals or individual dishes and foods.

  • Safely prepare meals for individuals notifying of food allergies or intolerances.

  • Clean kitchen and work areas.

  • Manage kitchen operations during your work shift.

  • Understand and adhere to proper food handling, safety and sanitation regulations expected for commercial kitchen operations in NB.

  • Work within a team to ensure timely preparation of nutritious meals to a high quality and standard.

  • Use basic culinary techniques and cooking methods to prepare meals as required for the position.

 

COMPENSATION:

The position is a seasonal full-time position with offered shifts to work at minimum 35 hours per week on the Huntsman Upper or Lower Campus through to early December 2024 following completion of a 2-month probationary period. Compensation package includes:

  • Competitive hourly wage commensurate with experience

  • Membership to numerous tourist attractions throughout New Brunswick

  • 5 days paid sick leave

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2-5 years of experience in professional kitchen, restaurant or hotel setting.

  • Able to deliver and exceed the expectations for a wide ranging customer base, often with varied meal preparation for different groups concurrently.

  • Able to obtain and/or maintain any government required licences, certificates or permits.

  • Self-motivated individual with a strong desire to share knowledge and passion related to food preparation methods and new menu items.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain cost controls within fixed customer budgets when establishing menu items and food preparation.

  • Professional appearance and manner with demonstrated ability to work well within a team environment.

  • Physical ability to perform assigned duties that may require extended periods to stand, sit or walk.

  • Able to grasp, lift and/or carry up to 50 lbs. as needed.

  • Finger/hand dexterity to operate kitchen machinery, knives, etc.

  • Able to withstand changes in temperature, occasional smoke, steam and heat while working in a kitchen area.

  • Must possess hearing, visual and sensory abilities to observe and detect emergency situations and in preparation of meals.

  • Ability to legally work or obtain a Visa to work in Canada.

  • Willing and able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

  • Valid driver’s licence – class 5.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Culinary certificate is considered an asset for the position.

The Huntsman Marine Science Centre is an independent not-for-profit and charity, located near the mouth of the Bay of Fundy in St Andrews, New Brunswick. Our mission is to inspire ocean stewardship through education programming and advance marine science through collaborative research projects.
