Christofor Research Laboratory

The Christofor Research Lab was opened in September, 1995 by then Lieutenant-Governor, the Honourable Margaret Norrie McCain and is now our main research facility. This lab provides individual research space, special algal growth rooms, walk-in cold rooms, controlled environmental rooms as well as space for holding and experimenting with fishes, invertebrates, and plants.

Description

Upper Floor: Ten individual research labs (six small at 135 sq.ft.; two medium at 160 sq.ft.; and two large at 230 sq.ft.) each supplied with fresh water, running sea water (at ambient temperature), and a compressed air supply. Each lab has a wet bench and sink with aquaria available for in-lab work and a dry area for other activities such as writing or microscopy.

In addition to the individual research labs, there are two, controlled-environment rooms with running fresh water and sea water, and with both light and temperature control; an open wet bench area for small aquaria and culture dishes provided with sea water and compressed air; an algal growth and live-feed room, fitted with vertical bar lighting; specially designed photomicroscopy room with two photo-microscopes (Leica/Wild M420 and an Olympus compound research microscope) on a vibration-free bench; a balance room for delicate measurements, the balances mounted on a vibration-free bench; an equipment room with work space provided with a variety of equipment items (list available on request), as well as, a fume hood and a small room housing a scintillation counter; and a store room which stocks normal laboratory supplies and glassware for the use of researchers.

Lower Floor: An area of about 2,000 sq. ft. of floor space is available for tanks designated for fish research and an equal area is available for work with invertebrates and plants.

This space is supplied with running fresh water and running sea water, with some provision for temperature control as well as compressed air. There is also a walk-in cold room and a walk-in freezer.
