Classification

Introduction to Classification System

Sponges, sea anemones, shrimp, brittle stars and 1.5 million other identified animals inhabit this planet. To zoologists, scientists who study animals, this would be a bewildering array were it not for the science of systematics, which allows zoologists to place animals with similar body plans into common groups. Zoologists commonly work with large groupings called phyla; singular, phylum.

The classification system is available in English and French.
