Boat Information

The main HMSC research vessel is the FUNDY SPRAY, a 50’ converted offshore lobster boat. The boat is certified by Transport Canada to carry 20 passengers and 2 crew, anywhere in the Bay of Fundy.

The boat’s capabilities include bottom trawling, bottom dragging, sediment sampling, plankton sampling and most other types of oceanographic sampling. The FUNDY SPRAY has two wet holds to hold fish samples alive to be brought back to the lab.

The Fundy Spray research vessel

The vessel is equipped with state of the art electronics, and has a top speed of 19 kts which also make it ideal for marine mammal and bird cruises throughout the bay.

The secondary research vessel is the CEDARS RUN, a 22’ Osprey. The boat can carry 3 passengers plus a skipper. The 30 kt top speed makes it ideal for marine bird and mammal reconnaissance.

This boat is also equipped with state of the art electronics and life saving equipment.

HMSC also has a Cree designed 26’ fiberglass runabout. This vessel is equipped with a 50 hp 4 stroke outboard engine. It has a top speed of 25 kts, and is used primarily as a dive support vessel.
