ARC (Atlantic Reference Centre) Services

The ARC provides scientific services for Canadian and US federal and provincial/state departments and agencies, non-government organizations, universities, industry, and the public:

Biodiversity - related activities (examples)

  • NaGISA (Natural Geography In Shore Areas)
    • The ARC is the Atlantic Ocean regional centre of this global Census of Marine Life (CoML) program
    • Scope: a census and monitoring of species in nearshore habitats of Atlantic Canada and western Africa
  • Regional marine species registers (work in progress)
  • DNA “barcoding” of Canadian Atlantic fishes
    • A Fish Barcode of Life program of the Consortium for the Barcode of Life initiative; a CMB project in collaboration with Dalhousie University
    • Scope: developing DNA barcodes as a taxonomic tool for the >800 species of Canadian Atlantic fishes for online distribution via FishBOL and GenBank
  • Feasibility testing & protocol development for monitoring the environment under deep-water salmon aquaculture sites using Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) technology
  • Evaluating biodiversity for marine environmental assessments (e.g. ICES Journal of Marine Science 58: 417-426. 2001)
    • Studies evaluating the impact of salmon aquaculture on benthic community biodiversity.
    • an examination of the range of options for measuring and assessing the state of marine biodiversity as a tool in environmental impact assessments
  • Assessment of in-stream tidal electrical power generation
    • Evaluation of Head Harbour Passage, NB, for optimal site determination, in collaboration with HMSC, Virginia Tech Advanced Research Institute, Fisheries & Oceans Canada, and University of Maine
    • Hydrographic & biological assessment of four potential disposition areas in the Bay of Fundy, for the NB Dept. of Natural Resources, in collaboration with Irving Oil Limited & Jacques Whitford
    • Bay of Fundy characterization of biodiversity & environment for strategic environmetal assessment; project of Jacques Whitford, Acadia Centre for Estuarine Research, Devine Tarbell & Assoc. Inc., the HMSC, W.F. Baird and Assoc., & Jim Calvesbert Consulting
  • Regional and global biodiversity and informatics organizations not detailed above:

Processing of aquatic biological samples and identification of specimens

  • marine invertebrate plankton
    • e.g. Arctic & Antarctic zooplankton (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, 2005-2007)
    • e.g. Grand Bank, Newfoundland, zooplankton (Dept. of Fisheries & Oceans, 1994-2008)
  • ichthyoplankton - marine, estuarine and freshwater
    • e.g. Canadian Atlantic waters (Dept. of Fisheries & Oceans, 1977-1999)
    • e.g. Georges Bank (US “GLOBEC” program 1997-2001)
    • e.g. Maine coastal waters ( Maine Dept. of Marine Resources, 1989-2007)
    • e.g. Passamaquoddy Bay (MER Assessment Corp., 2006-2008)
  • marine benthos
    • e.g. Senegal, Africa, invertebrates of rocky shore & seagrass habitats (NaGISA, 2008)
    • e.g. continental shelf invertebrates off Nova Scotia (1994-1995)
  • fishes, estuarine to deep-sea
    • e.g. Canadian Atlantic fishes for Fish Barcode of Life Program (Centre for Marine Biodiversity, Dept. of Fisheries & Oceans, 2005-2008)
    • e.g. northern Gulf of St. Lawrence fishes (Dept. of Fisheries & Oceans, 2006-2007)
    • e.g. deep-sea fishes of the Scotian Slope (Dept. of Fisheries & Oceans 1995-2008)
  • gut contents
    • e.g. swordfish (Dept. of Fisheries & Oceans, 2007)
    • cod, haddock and larval herring stomachs (Dept. of Fisheries & Oceans)
  • freshwater insects

e.g. invertebrate survey of NB streams (NB Dept. of Environment, 2001-2006)

Lobster Shrimp
Axius serratus, sometimes known as the lobster shrimp, is a bottom dweller that can live in very polluted conditions.
