Course fees include residence and meals on the Huntsman campus, boat, lab fees, and admission to the Huntsman Fundy Discovery Aquarium.

Canada’s Bay of Fundy is an excellent outdoor classroom. The daily cycle of the eight meter tide stir up nutrients which provide the essential base for many marine food chains. Twice a day as the tide recedes the ocean floor is exposed allowing terrestrial creatures, like us, to explore. Join us as we venture out into this unique environment to see what we can discover and what the tide has left behind. What we catch and collect is what we will observe more closely back in the lab when the tide returns and covers our playground.

Come and explore the shores of the Bay of Fundy with students who share your interest in marine life and the unique environment that supports it. This hands-on field course will introduce participants to the animals hiding under the seaweed, under the rocks, in the mud. Bring a bucket. What you collect is what you will study back in the lab. Once you understand the basics you will be able to assist with the collection of baseline data for a number of on-going research projects. The climate is changing, animals are adapting, be part of the data collection team.

Located at the mouth of the Bay of Fundy, the Huntsman is perfectly positioned to access one of the worlds most productive ecosystems. The daily rise and fall of the huge tide stirs up nutrients that provide food for the drifting planktonic community. This microscopic plants and animals feed large schools of fish and krill; whose abundance in turn attracts whales, porpoises , seals and seabirds from all over the North Atlantic. Out on the water students learn to identify the local species and observe their behaviour. Land time will we spent studying characteristics, adaptations, migrations and more.
