Research
Atlantic Reference Centre
Overview
The Atlantic Reference Centre (ARC) is a research museum for Canadian marine life and a centre for biodiversity information and applied environmental research.
In 1984 the Huntsman Marine Science Centre and Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) created the ARC to curate samples of Canadian Atlantic marine life collected by research surveys as an archive of taxonomic and biodiversity information.
Operationally, DFO provides facilities and partial funding, while the Huntsman provides staffing, additional program funding, and program administration. Together, the ARC and DFO collaborate on marine biodiversity research and planning. ARC services include sample collecting and processing, specimen identification and curation, plus information, advice, and research for governments, universities, museums, private institutions, industry and the public.
In addition, ARC scientists train students, technicians and researchers on the identification and curation of aquatic organisms, and offer a course on the analysis of biological diversity and community structure.

Applications are invited for Visiting Fellowships at the Huntsman Marine Science Centre. The goal of this program is to bring scientists to St. Andrews to take advantage of collaborative research opportunities in the local community. Awarded funds must be spent at the Huntsman.
Applications to include:
- CV
- budget
- proposed research outline
- names of local collaborators
The maximum cash award will be $3,000, but may be increased through reductions in billable onāsite expenses.

St. Andrews Bird Banding StationMonitoring Songbird Populations and Migration
Introduction
Concern is growing over the decline of North American migratory songbird populations. Each year the woods seem quieter or a specific song is missing. The forests of New Brunswick have seen many changes through logging, agricultural clearing and the growth of urban areas. As the habitat changes so must the bird populations. The species that are common now are not the same ones that would have been common in the virgin forests. In order to monitor these on-going changes a major commitment of time and resources are needed to collect standardized data.

International Aquaculture Innovation CentreThe International Aquaculture Innovation Centre (IAIC) is a department at the
Huntsman Marine Science Centre. The Huntsman's IAIC mandate is to find
solutions to challenges for the sustainable development of the
aquaculture sector. The local area's economy is directly linked to the
opportunities provided to those generating wealth from ocean resources.
As traditional fisheries have declined, development efforts have focused
on finding meaningful alternate economic drivers.
The
IAIC is a multifaceted department collaborating with the industrial
sector, university and/or government research scientists; conducting
proprietary research for industry and private companies; and/or renting
space for various research projects in which the IAIC is not directly
involved.
