Manager of Education & Outreach

SUMMARY: The Huntsman Marine Science Centre (www.huntsmanmarine.ca) is the only private research and education institution along the shores of the world renown Bay of Fundy with a focus on educating all age groups about ocean stewardship and completing research to support responsible use of our shared aquatic resources. Huntsman is located in the only resort town in New Brunswick, Canada – St Andrews-by-the-sea – with its historic charm, active year round lifestyle, convenient access to the Bay of Fundy, and legacy contribution to marine research in Canada. As part of its Education & Outreach assets, Huntsman operates the Fundy Discovery Aquarium – the highest visited non-government tourist attraction in the Province, teaching laboratories to accommodate grade school, university and professional workshop attendees, on-campus residence services that can accommodate 80 students and instructors at a time, and the Fundy Spray vessel to enhance hand-on learning experiences.

Huntsman seeks to fill a new Manager of Education & Outreach position within the institution who will lead a consolidated Education & Outreach department. The successful individual will work with a dynamic team of educators and public outreach professionals with a general focus on ocean ecosystems and organisms, and more specifically the Bay of Fundy region.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: The position is a management and business development appointment focused on education and outreach with annual salary commensurate with experience, plus benefits, including health care with life insurance and pension plan. The position is open to be filled immediately with a desired start date of 1 April 2020.


Management: 60%

  • Develop Education & Outreach (E&O) department annual budget and track project/monthly revenue and expenses based on internal Huntsman practices.
  • Assess facility and equipment maintenance and enhancement needs, budget and organize implementation, and plan for future development.
  • Active participation in all Huntsman required aspects as a member of the leadership team (e.g., management meetings, Board committee meetings, fundraising events, etc.).
  • Allocate and manage Huntsman E&O human, facility and financial assets to develop and deliver inspiring oceans related educational opportunities.

Business and Program Development: 30%

  • Implement marketing initiatives (e.g., conference attendance, direct marketing, etc.) to develop business opportunities.
  • Work within a team to develop funding proposals to support new and ongoing E&O initiatives.
  • Engage Huntsman donor community as required to secure programmatic funding.
  • Participate to develop hands-on experiential learning curriculum that follows state-of-the-art pedagogical practices as a team with other education & outreach staff.
  • Prepare progress and annual reports, measured against agreed metrics and milestones, as required by funders.

Other Support: 10%

  • Occasionally teach program content to students of all ages as required.
  • Increase the profile of Huntsman E&O capacity throughout the local and global community.
  • Assist in further business development across all aspects of the Huntsman.


  • Certificate, diploma or degree in education or teaching or equivalent combination of education and experience in managing educational programming and outreach.
  • STEM related experience.
  • Successful experience with grant proposal preparation, collaboration building, leveraging and stacking of funds from multiple sources, and project management and reporting.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit with a strong desire to expand the present Huntsman Education & Outreach portfolio, including K-12 education, university level offerings, professional workshops, and public education opportunities.
  • Proven progressive advancement in leadership and responsibility throughout your career, including human resource and budgetary management.
  • Demonstrated ability to cooperate with colleagues and contribute to multidisciplinary research.
  • Demonstrated experience (2-3 years) applying pedagogical theory to develop effective curriculum.
  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to legally work or obtain a Visa to work in Canada.


  • Masters Education or Masters Business Administration level education.
  • Business management experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in marine sciences.
