This fall the Marine Debris Working Group and the Huntsman Marine Science Centre will host the creation of a Marine Debris pilot program for the south west region of the Bay of Fundy. This program will aim to reduce garbage in the Bay of Fundy through reduction and prevention of garbage accumulation from both land based sources and fishing practices. It will also work with existing initiatives, such as the Derelict Fishing Gear removal (Fundy North Fisherman’s Association) and Beach Sweeps (Fundy BayKeeper) to remove waste currently in the environment.
The program is a multi-stakeholder initiative, with strategy contributions from local municipalities, environmental groups, non-government organizations, First Nations, Harbour Authorities, Traditional Fisheries, Atlantic Canada Fish Farmers Association, provincial and federal government group representatives, UNB students, and regional waste management operations. Reba McIver is the program coordinator of the Marine Debris and for any further info or if you are interested in the program she can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. or by phone at 506.529.1225.
